“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous,” once said Gabrielle Coco Chanel. The legendary designer would surely agree that Chanel ambassador Lily-Rose Depp is blessed with both traits, particularly when it comes to style.

With her statement-making wardrobe, Lily-Rose is redefining French-girl style. She’s navigating a different fashion landscape to the stylish French women that came before her, and she brings a youthful mood to anything that she wears.

Come daytime, Depp champions ’90s and Noughties-inspired staples, like baggy jeans, cropped tanks, blouses and skimpy minidresses, often worn with a Chanel bag hooked nonchalantly over her arm.

For smarter occasions, she always favours Chanel, of course. Karl Lagerfeld considered the French-American actor a muse and cast her for runway shows and campaigns during his tenure, and Virginie Viard has continued Depp’s relationship with the house. (These days, the 23-year-old is a permanent fixture on the front row.)

Chanel is responsible for her fashion-forward red-carpet looks. She’s shown a penchant for Parisienne elegance from a young age, having attended her first Met Gala when she was just 16. In 2016, the teen graced the Met steps in a chiffon halter-neck gown from Lagerfeld’s spring/summer 2016 couture collection, scattered with wood chip pailettes and embellishments made from recycled materials, worn with a textured bomber. The look was perfect for the starlet, and gave off cool-girl energy that was both classy and fabulous, if you will.

Other formal highlights include: the hot-pink couture gown she wore at her second Met in 2017, the glamorous LBD dripping with chains she wore to the event in 2019, and the sultry lace naked catsuit-dress she wore to the BAFTAs in 2020.

A word or two on Chanel classics, such as the maison’s signature bouclé tweed. She’s worn Chanel’s trademark relaxed jacket, which Coco developed in response to the restricting style renaissance after World War Two. Depp put her own spin on the iconic staple at the spring/summer 2021 show by wearing her pink version with jeans, a bralette and a midriff-flossing chain around her torso.

Depp scored another bouclé tweed moment at Venice Film Festival in 2019 and looked effortless in a strapless corseted bouclé top and skirt, the latter of which featured pockets that added a fresh, contemporary twist.

Lily-Rose is a fashion force in her own right and certainly one to watch. There will be plenty of fashion moments to note around the press tour for her upcoming series The Idol, in which she stars alongside The Weeknd.
